Tanya Bakes: Chocolate Fudge Spider-Web Cake

Hey Everyone,

As today is Halloween I thought it was fitting that I would write about something Halloween related.

I realised the other day that I hadn’t done any baking for quite a while and I was in the mood to so I decided to bake a cake.
My first thought was to look through Tanya Burr’s baking book ‘Tanya Bakes’ as I have been wanted to try something from the book for ages; then I saw this cake and knew it would be perfect.

Here is the recipe for the cake and my finished result.

Ingredients for the cake:

225g Unsalted Butter
200ml Buttermilk
200g Dark Chocolate
1tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
2tsp Baking Powder
50g Cocoa Powder
250g Plain Flour
200g Dark Muscovado Sugar

3 eggs (forgotten in the photo)

You will need two 21cm round loose-bottom cake tins.

Ingredients for the icing:

250g Slightly Salted Butter
275g Icing Sugar
200g Dark Chocolate
1tsp Vanilla Extract

25g (approx) White Chocolate

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/GM4. Grease and line two cake tins.
  2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a saucepan until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Sift the flour, cocoa powder into a large bowl and add the muscovado sugar.
  4. Mix together the buttermilk and eggs in a separate bowl and add the chocolate mixture. Fold in the flour to form a smooth batter and divide between the two cake tins.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes and leave to cool in the tins.
  6. For the icing, melt the dark chocolate in a bowl set over simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Set aside to cool slightly.
  7. Cream the butter in a bowl until light and smooth, then slowly add the icing sugar until fully incorporated. Add the dark chocolate and vanilla to form a smooth icing.
  8. Melt the white chocolate in the same way, then transfer to a piping bag with a thin nozzle and leave to cool for 10 minutes until slightly cooled.
  9. Use about half the mixture to sandwich the cake together, then use the rest to ice the top and sides of the cake. Pipe even circles on top, starting in the middle and working outwards. Use a skewer to draw lines from the centre to the edge of the cake, to create a spider web. Pop a decorative spider on top and enjoy!

Here is the finished result of my cake!
I am really happy with how it turned out and it actually tasted really yummy. It was demolished within a few days in my house, lets just say my dad and brother are big fans of chocolate cake!

I hope you enjoyed this post, do let me know if you make this cake – I would definitely recommend it!

See you next week with a new post,

Favourite Autumnal Eyeshadow Palettes

Hey Everyone,

Like I said in my ‘Update’ post yesterday, I am going to try putting up my blog posts on a Monday now. Let me know which day you prefer and if you prefer reading posts on a Monday or a Sunday.

Today I thought I would share with you my favourite autumnal eyeshadow palettes that I have been loving at the moment.

My first favourite which is a quite new purchase; I bought the ‘Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette’ when I was in New York over the summer.
I absolutely love it and all of the shades are perfect for Autumn. My favourite eyeshadows are more warm tones as I feel like it matches my skin tone and hair colour much better.
If you could get any eyeshadow palette for Autumn I would highly recommend this one as it has pretty much every shade you need to create many different looks.
The shades are all so wearable from day to night and are highly pigmented.
One thing that I don’t like as much about the palette is the packaging on the front; it is beautiful and feels such high quality but it gets dirty very easily. I also found that the brush that comes with the palette isn’t very good so I use some of my other eyeshadow brushes to apply the eyeshadow.

My second favourite is a Mac eyeshadow quad I made myself with one of the ‘Pro Palette Eyeshadow Quads’. All of the shadows go really well together and I feel like the shades that cover most bases. I can’t actually remember what the names of the shades are except the bottom left one, which is ‘Amber Lights’. Amber Lights has to be my all time favourite Mac eyeshadow shade.
I find these eyeshadows are really pigmented, are very easy to blend and you can create some great day or night looks with them. If you don’t like the shades that I have in my palette you can go to a Mac shop or look online and there will definitely be a shade that you like as they have such a huge variety.

My final favourite is the ‘Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp Quad’ that I got for Christmas last year. This palette is quite pricey for what it is but it is really high quality. You can tell this from the packaging as it is so beautiful, the rose gold on the inside and the design on the front is so simple and sophisticated. The shadows are also such high quality, they are so soft and easy to blend and are very pigmented so a little goes a long way. I find this palette is great for evening looks as the shades are quite dark and vampy.

So those are my Top 3 Autumnal Eyeshadow Palettes that I have been loving at the moment. I have a slight obsession with eyeshadow palettes, especially ones with these kind of shades so it is a miracle that I don’t have many more.

I hope you enjoyed this post, again, do let me know which day you would prefer me to put up my posts.

See you next week with a new post,

Bath & Body Works Candle Haul

Hey Everyone,

Last week my dad went to New York for business and I asked him to get some Bath & Body Works Candles for me, so I thought I would share with you the ones that I got.

I have been wanting a Bath & Body Works candle for years now and after seeing everyone on YouTube and in blog posts talking about them, it made me want them even more so when my dad told me he was going to America I knew I had to ask him to bring some home for me.
One of the things that really made me want to get some of these candles was Zoë’s (Zoella) Autumn Bath & Body Works Haul YouTube video, which is so relaxing and satisfying to watch.
I am very lucky that I managed to get 6 3-wick candles – these are going to last me for years!

Spiced Pomegranate Cider

Scent: Ruby Red Pomegranate, Sweet Apple Cider, Muddled Blackberry and Star Anise

This was one of the first ones I wanted to pick up; to start with I was drawn to it by the colour and the copper lid but then I saw what the scent was and just knew I had to pick it up. If I’m 100% honest it doesn’t smell like what I thought it would smell like, I thought it would be more spicy and christmassy but it is very sweet. I still love the scent none the less but it just wasn’t what I expected. It is a lovely one to burn in the evening to make you feel all cozy before you go to bed.

Cinnamon Sugared Doughnut

Scent: Crushed Cinnamon, Sugar Crystals and Homemade Doughnut

This is my favourite out of all the candles I got, which is actually quite surprising because I wasn’t going to get it to start with as I was worried I would find it too sweet but I absolutely love it!
It smells like what is says on the tin…a cinnamon sugared doughnut. If you have ever been to Bill’s and had the little cinnamon doughnut bites, then just imagine them and that’s what it smells like…HEAVEN!!

Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin

Scent: Harvest Pumpkin, Spiced Clove, Vanilla Cream and Brown Sugar

This was the other candle that I wasn’t sure if I was going to like but ended up being one of my favourites. I was worried that it would be too sweet and smell too much like pumpkin but it doesn’t, it’s the right balance of sweet and autumnal. The spiced clove in it makes it so much more autumnal and spicy rather than to being too sweet, which I really like. Also, cinnamon is one of my all time favourite scents so that’s probably why I love it!

Scent: Bright Red Gala Apple, Juicy Fig, Eucalyptus Leaf and Fir Balsam

This was the original candle that I wanted to buy because I thought I would love it but I actually don’t like it as much as some of the other scents. It smells very crisp, fresh and Autumnal, my mum actually liked the scent much more than me so I gave it to her to burn in our kitchen.

Scent: Crisp Red Apple, Golden Nectar and Warm Clove Spice

This is another scent that I thought I would like more than I did; again I still do really like it, it is just not what I expected and I prefer some of the other, sweeter scents. This scent is really earthy and like it says, it does smell just like leaves on an autumn day and I really like it.

Honey Crisp Apple

Scent: Golden Honeycrisp, Apple Blossom and Fresh Sugarcane

This candle is so lovely and fresh and crisp and really reminds me of crisp autumn days. The main reason I love this candle is because it reminds me of going to visit my grandpa – in his garden he has an orchard and from spring to autumn his garden smells like apples and he also always has them in his house so that’s what this scent reminds me of and it makes me really happy.

Top 3 Favourites:
1. Cinnamon Sugared Doughnut
2. Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin
3. Spiced Pomegranate Cider

As you have probably gathered from this post, I am not very good at describing scents but I hope you liked this post. Let me know if you have any Bath & Body Works Candles and which ones are your favourites.

See you soon,

Autumn Tag 2016

Hey everyone,

I saw this tag pop up on Bloglovin and I just knew I had to do it.
Autumn is by far my favourite season, I love the feeling of the air getting crisper, the leaves turning orange and the fact that Christmas is just around the corner.

1. What signifies the start of Autumn for you?

The things that signify the start of Autumn for me are when the air starts getting crisper, when the mornings and evenings get darker and when the leaves start to turn beautiful orange, red and yellow colours.

2. What is your favourite Autumn scent?

One scent that I absolutely love is cinnamon when it comes to Autumn and Winter as it always makes me feel warm and cozy and it also reminds me of Christmas.
My favourite perfume scent for Autumn is Early Grey & Cucumber by Jo Malone. I know that doesn’t sound very autumnal but to me it is really comforting.
My favourite Autumn candle scents are Gingerbread Village by Zoella Lifestyle and Winter by the White Company. Also, recently my dad got me some Bath & Body works candles from America and my favourites are Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Spiced Pomegranite Cider and Cinnamon Sugared Donut.

3. What is your favourite Autumn colour?

My favourite colour in general is orange and it is even more of my favourite colour in Autumn;I especially love more of a burnt orange in Autumn. Another colour I really like in Autumn is burgundy, the majority of my Autumn wardrobe is burgundy.

4. What is your favourite Autumn drink?

I’m not really the kind of person who likes popular drinks such as the ‘Pumpkin Spiced Latte’ as I don’t drink coffee.
If I could have any drink on a cold Autumn evening I would have Earl Grey tea with honey, exotic I know!

5. What TV show, new or old, are you looking forward to this Autumn?

One of my favourite TV Shows of all time, Once Upon A Time started a two weeks ago, which I have been looking forward to for so long!
I would 100% recommend this TV show to all of you – even though it is a show based on fairy tale stories I wouldn’t let you put that off if you don’t like fairy tales because I love this programme and I was never a huge fan of fairy tales.
And I mean have you seen Colin O’Donaghue and Jamie Dornan in this show..? 😍

6. What is your favourite Autumn fashion trend?

I don’t really follow many fashion trends but what I do love to wear in Autumn is the colour burgundy – wearing it makes me feel so autumnal and cozy, I love it!
I recently got a pair of black boots from Asos, which I have been loving but they don’t keep my feet very warm so on the colder days my go to shoes are my Uggs.
I also love to wear big cozy scarfs and bobble hats with my big burgundy winter coat from Topshop.

7. What is your favourite makeup look come autumnal weather?

I absolutely love Autumn make up! However, because I’m at school most of the time I don’t really get to wear much make up in Autumn, which is quite sad.
The past few years I have been a bit more experimental and bold with my makeup and I have been pushing my boundaries with red and berry lipsticks, one of my favourites being Rimmel 107.
My favourite eye shadow look for Autumn is a mix of copper, orange and brown shades – one of my all time favourite eye shadows is ‘Amber Lights’ by Mac, which is a beautiful coppery shade.

That is all for this post, I hope you enjoyed it!
Let me know what your favourite things are about Autumn and I will see you next week with another post,

Zoella Lifestyle Haul & Review

Hey Everyone,

I thought I would share with you the things that I recently picked up from the Zoella Lifestyle collection.
The collection is currently available at Boots and Superdrug.

Lifestyle and homeware has always been something that I love so when I saw Zoë was bringing out a homeware/lifestyle collection I was very very excited and couldn’t wait to pick up some of the products!

On my Travels Backpack £50

The first thing I picked up was the backpack, which also contained the travel mug, key ring and pencils.
Some people were saying that they thought that the bag was very overpriced but I don’t necessarily agree – I feel it would be overpriced if it was just the bag that you got but considering you get three other products inside I feel it is pretty reasonable.
I absolutely love this backpack – it is a great size for travelling as it can fit so much in it, including my laptop, which I often like to keep in my hand luggage for long haul flights.
Another thing I love about it is the colour, I wear so much grey and black so it will go with pretty much everything I wear. It also has a coral coloured lining inside the bag, which is really cute and makes it a little bit more special.
One thing that I would like to change about the bag is the fact that the top flap doesn’t shut properly, it just flops down, which I feel might get quite annoying or might make me paranoid that people might be able to take stuff out of it without me knowing. I feel like they should have done something like but a button or a magnet on the flap to make it stay down. But other than that I absolutely love it and can’t wait to take it with me when I next go on holiday at Christmas.

Warm Hands, Warm Heart Travel Mug Set £14

I love the idea of this travel mug – the design is also absolutely beautiful with the marble background, copper writing and coral lid. I love that it is made of plastic, which makes it much lighter than most travel mugs that are ceramic. It also has a screw on lid, which great because it prevents the drink inside spilling.

You can also get this mug in a set with some fingerless gloves but as it came in the backpack I didn’t see any point in getting that set.

The Key to Inspiration £6

The key ring is also adorable with the copper and coral design and it will be going on my car keys as I have recently started to learn to drive.

Once Upon A Time Journal £14

One of my favourites of the whole collection has to be this notebook.
It is  such good quality for the price and it is just beautiful! The grey colour and the copper embossing on the front makes it look really expensive. I also love how throughout the book there are little quotations to keep you inspired.
I think I am going to use this notebook for blog post planning to make it that bit more exciting.
It also has the name of one of my favourite TV shows on the front! What more could you want?

Write on Point £5

The pencils also match the notebook perfectly and have really cute little sayings on them in copper text, like Love from and Hugs & Kisses, which makes them feel that bit more special.

She Designed A Life She Loved Stationary Set £10

I also love this stationary set – I am a bit of a stationary/post it note/list addict so this set is my ultimate stationary dream.
I love how there is a weekly planner and post it notes as these are really helpful for remembering things you need to do for each day. This is going to come in very handy for school as I have so much work now I’m in Upper Sixth so hopefully this will help me keep track of everything I have to do.
Again, this set looks such high quality and the design is absolutely gorgeous so I am very happy with this purchase and I will be using it on a regular basis.

Gingerbread Village Candle £10

I am in love with the scent of this candle! It is so Christmassy, warm and cozy and it makes me feel so warm and comforted.
The packaging of the candles is amazing and so unique – as you open the candle it folds out with a beautiful picture on the inside, in this case some gingerbread house cookies. It makes opening the candle that big more special.
I love how sleek and sophisticated the packaging looks as it is so clean and elegant with the plain glass and modern lettering of the scent on the front.

Naps Fix Everything Cushion £12

This cushion is so soft and comfy!
The front side is a kind of canvas material and the back is a velvety kind of material and it also has little pink pom-poms on the corners – it’s so cute and adds a bit of comfort to any room. It also matches really well with my room and I keep it on my bed so I can see it everyday.
It’s true though, naps do fix everything!

There are still some things that I would love to try from this collection but at the moment I am extremely happy with all the products that I have and I can’t wait to start using them.

I’m not going to lie, as soon as I finished taking these photos yesterday I went and lit the Gingerbread Village candle because I’ve been desperate to light it for days but have had to take the photos!

My Zoella Lifestyle wish list:

  • Lazy Day Fragranced Candle & Socks
  • Homemade Treats Reed Diffuser
  • Another Gingerbread Village Candle

Overall, I think this range is my favourite that Zoë has brought out – I feel like it is much more sophisticated and grown up than the other ranges she has brought out which I love. Don’t get me wrong, I still love all of her bath & body products but this range has to be my favourite.
The copper and marble theme is honestly beautiful and I think Zoë has done incredibly well!
I am very proud of her and you can see that she has worked so hard on it, like she does for everything she brings out, and I can’t wait to see what else she brings out in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this post!
Leave me a comment if you have picked up anything from this range and what you thought of it.
See you next week,
